As part of the home's renovation, the objective was to retain the existing timber staircase while completely transforming its appearance with a deep Black Japan colour and durable professional finish.
The original coating was fully sanded back to expose the natural timber before the staircase was progressively prepared to a fine finish ready for staining.

Timber staircases require considerably more detailed preparation than an open floor area due to the individual treads, risers, nosings, edges, stringers and other exposed timber components.
The existing brown coating was carefully removed and the staircase progressively sanded and detailed to produce a clean and consistent bare timber surface.
Once sanded, the much lighter natural timber underneath became visible and provided the clean base required for the dramatic colour transformation.

FINE PREPARATION FOR BLACK JAPAN STAIN
Careful preparation is particularly important when applying a dark timber stain.
Darker colours such as Black Japan can emphasise the natural grain and variation within the timber as well as inconsistencies in preparation, making the final sanding and detailing stages an important part of achieving a balanced result.
Following fine preparation, Black Japan stain was applied to create the deep, contemporary colour selected for the staircase.

2K FINISH WITH ANTI-SLIP ADDITIVE
Once the required colour had been achieved, the stained staircase was protected with a professional 2K clear finishing system selected to provide durability for this high-traffic area.
An anti-slip additive was incorporated into the finishing system to provide additional traction and improve the slip resistance of the finished staircase.
The completed coating protects the stained timber while retaining the depth and character created by the Black Japan colour.

THE COMPLETED STAIRCASE TRANSFORMATION
The finished staircase is a substantial change from the original brown timber appearance.
The deep Black Japan finish now creates a strong architectural contrast against the surrounding white walls and lighter herringbone timber flooring, while retaining the existing staircase rather than replacing it.
