Founded in 1924, Southport Surf Life Saving Club has more than a century of history at Main Beach. The existing clubhouse was constructed in 1936 following the destruction of the original clubhouse during cyclonic weather and was officially opened in January 1937. Today, the Main Beach Pavilion and Southport Surf Lifesaving Club are recognised on the Queensland Heritage Register.
The project required the heavily worn existing timber flooring to be carefully sanded and refinished while retaining the character, repairs, markings and natural variation accumulated throughout the building's long history.

A HEAVILY WORN COMMERCIAL TIMBER FLOOR
Years of use had left the timber floor with extensive wear, scratches, old coating deterioration and areas where the surface had become considerably darker and more heavily marked.
As a working surf lifesaving club and community facility, the flooring had experienced significantly more traffic than a typical residential timber floor.
Rather than replacing the original timber, the objective was to carefully restore the existing floor and preserve the appearance and history that makes the building unique.

PRESERVING THE CHARACTER OF THE ORIGINAL FLOOR
One of the most interesting features of this floor is the evidence of its long working life.
Different sections of timber, historic repairs, board replacement, old fixing marks and natural colour variation remain visible throughout the floor.
The aim of heritage floor restoration is not necessarily to make an old floor look newly installed. Careful sanding removes the deteriorated coating and surface wear while allowing the history and character of the original timber to remain visible.

PROFESSIONAL COMMERCIAL FLOOR SANDING
The existing coating was progressively removed before the timber was carefully sanded and prepared through the required stages to achieve a consistent fine finish.
Professional floor sanding equipment and dust extraction were used throughout the project, with detailed preparation carried out around edges, repaired sections and other areas requiring additional attention.
The sanding process revealed the natural timber beneath decades of wear while retaining the distinctive markings and variation of the original floor.

COMMERCIAL-GRADE PROTECTIVE FINISH
Following final sanding and preparation, the restored timber was protected with a professional commercial-grade coating system designed for the demands of a high-traffic public environment.
An anti-slip component was incorporated into the finishing system to provide additional surface grip while maintaining the natural appearance and character of the restored timber.
The result provides the durability required for an operational commercial facility while allowing the original flooring to remain a major feature of the historic interior.

THE COMPLETED HERITAGE FLOOR RESTORATION
The transformation demonstrates what can often be achieved by restoring an existing timber floor rather than replacing it.
