Black-Stained Tasmanian Oak Staircase — Oyster Cove
This Oyster Cove project involved the detailed restoration and colour transformation of an existing Tasmanian oak staircase.
The work extended beyond the stair treads and risers to include the stringers, handrails and closely spaced vertical balustrade battens.
These components required extensive labour and controlled hand sanding to prepare the timber consistently around edges, corners and narrow faces.
After fine preparation, a black stain was applied throughout the nominated timber components. The staircase was then protected with LOBA 2K Duo Satin for durability, with an anti-slip additive incorporated into the specified coating system to address the project’s slip-resistance requirements.
The dark colour created a strong architectural feature against the surrounding light interior while allowing the timber grain to remain visible.

Detailed Hand Sanding for Timber Staircases
A staircase contains considerably more detailed work than an equivalent area of open flooring.
Treads, risers, nosings, internal corners and stringers require separate preparation. Closely spaced balustrade battens and handrails add numerous faces, edges and junctions that cannot be prepared using normal floor-sanding machinery.
The Oyster Cove staircase required extensive controlled hand sanding to prepare these components for a dark stained finish.
This preparation is particularly important because stain can emphasise scratches, inconsistent sanding and differences in the timber.

Black Stain, Satin Finish & Anti-Slip Additive
Dark staining can completely change the architectural appearance of a Tasmanian oak staircase while still allowing the timber grain and natural variation to remain visible.
After staining, this Oyster Cove staircase was coated with LOBA 2K Duo Satin, a professional two-component water-based polyurethane selected for durability and a refined satin appearance.
An anti-slip additive was included in the specified coating system to provide additional surface grip and address the slip-resistance requirements of the project.
An anti-slip finish can feel more textured or grippy underfoot than the same coating without the additive.
Colour, sheen and slip-resistance requirements should all be discussed before work begins so the complete finishing system can be planned correctly.

Planning a Complete Staircase Restoration
Before quoting a staircase, the exact timber components being restored need to be identified.
Sanding the treads and leading edges alone is a different scope from including risers, stringers, posts, handrails and individual balustrade battens. Dark staining and anti-slip requirements also introduce additional preparation and coating stages.
Access between levels will be restricted during parts of the work. If the stairs provide the only access to bedrooms or living areas, alternative arrangements may be required while stain and coatings are being applied and drying.
Surrounding floors and adjoining surfaces are protected where practical, although masking tape applied to painted surfaces can carry a risk of lifting weak or recently applied paint when removed.

Staircase Refinishing Costs in Oyster Cove
Timber staircases are normally quoted separately from open floor areas because of the detailed sanding and hand preparation involved.
The price depends on the number and design of the steps, the components included, existing coating, repairs, access and selected colour and finish. Closely spaced balustrade battens can add substantial labour because each face and edge requires individual preparation.
For an initial assessment, send photographs from several angles, the number of treads and a clear description of which staircase components you want refinished.

Oyster Cove Floor & Stair Sanding — Frequently Asked Questions
Can Tasmanian oak stairs be stained black?
Yes, provided the timber can be suitably prepared. Dark colour highlights the grain but can also make preparation marks and natural variation more noticeable, so careful sanding is essential.
Can you refinish the balustrade as well as the steps?
Yes, nominated timber handrails, posts and balustrade battens can be included. These components must be clearly identified because they involve considerably more detailed labour than the treads alone.
Does an anti-slip additive change the finish?
It can make the coated surface feel more textured or grippy. The appearance and feel depend on the coating system, additive and specified slip-resistance requirements.
Does an anti-slip additive mean the stairs cannot be slippery?
No flooring finish can eliminate every possibility of slipping. The additive is used to increase surface grip as part of the specified coating system. Footwear, contamination, cleaning and ongoing wear also affect slip resistance.
Can I use the staircase during the work?
Access will be restricted during sanding, staining and coating. Newly coated stairs must remain unused until the product has reached the appropriate drying stage. This should be planned before work starts.
When is the staircase fully cured?
Drying and full curing are different. Chris will provide instructions for foot traffic, normal use and cleaning based on the coating system applied.
