This Currumbin project involved character-filled Cypress Pine flooring in a coastal home overlooking Elephant Rock. Careful sanding removed the darker existing coating before the timber was protected with a LOBA Invisible natural matt system.
With more than 30 years of timber flooring experience, you deal directly with the owner carrying out your work—from the initial assessment through to the finished floor.

Cypress Pine Floor Restoration Overlooking Elephant Rock
The original coating on this Currumbin floor had developed a deeper amber appearance that changed the colour of the Cypress Pine and reduced the visibility of its natural variation.
The floor was progressively sanded to remove the existing finish and prepare the timber for recoating. As the old coating was removed, the lighter raw colour, flowing grain and distinctive dark knots of the Cypress Pine became visible again.
The floor was then finished with a LOBA Invisible natural-look system in a matt sheen. This preserved a much lighter, raw-timber appearance while providing the protection needed for an interior timber floor.
The completed result suited the relaxed coastal character of the home and allowed the natural features of the Cypress Pine to become the focus.

Removing the Old Amber Finish
Older coatings can substantially change the appearance of a timber floor as they age. Ambering may make lighter species appear darker, more orange or more yellow than the natural timber underneath.
The comparison visible during this Currumbin project shows the difference clearly. One section retained the older coating while the adjoining Cypress Pine had been sanded back to clean timber.
Removing the finish consistently required progressive sanding across the boards, perimeter areas and transitions. Professional planetary sanding equipment and dust extraction were used during the preparation process.
Careful refinement was particularly important because natural-look matt systems do not disguise sanding marks or uneven preparation. The quality of the completed appearance begins with the surface underneath.

LOBA Invisible Natural Matt Finish
A natural or raw-look finish is designed to protect the timber while keeping its appearance closer to freshly sanded wood.
For this project, the LOBA Invisible system helped minimise the richer amber tone traditionally associated with older solvent-based coatings. Its matt appearance reduced surface reflection and retained the lighter character achieved through sanding.
A raw-look coating does not remove the timber’s natural variation. Cypress Pine contains prominent knots, mineral colouring and changes in grain that remain visible and form part of its character.
Lighting also affects how the finished floor appears. Areas beside the large coastal windows may look lighter than sections deeper inside the home, even though the same finishing system has been used throughout.

Preserving the Character of Cypress Pine
Cypress Pine has a distinctive appearance that differs from more uniform hardwood flooring. Dark knots, colour changes and expressive grain patterns are natural features of the species.
It is also softer than many Australian hardwoods, so existing dents and deeper marks may remain where completely removing them would require excessive sanding. These characteristics should be assessed as part of the restoration rather than treated as defects in the finishing process.
A natural matt coating works particularly well when the aim is to preserve this character. Instead of producing a heavy, glossy surface, it allows the knots, grain and individual board variation to remain visible.
Chris will explain what sanding is likely to improve and identify any deeper damage, movement or repairs that may remain apparent after restoration.

Planning Floor Restoration in a Coastal Property
Large windows and strong natural light can make colour variation, surface wear and changes in sheen more noticeable across a timber floor.
Before work begins, Chris will discuss the condition of the floor, access, furniture removal and the time required for sanding, coating and drying.
Professional sanding equipment and dust extraction help control sanding dust, although some fine dust may still occur during detailed edge work and hand preparation.
After completion, you will receive instructions covering limited foot traffic, furniture, rugs, cleaning and protecting the coating during its early curing period.

What Does Floor Sanding Cost in Currumbin?
The cost of sanding and refinishing a timber floor depends on its area, condition, existing coating, access and the finishing system selected.
Repairs, detailed edges, difficult coating removal, stairs and smaller areas with a high proportion of perimeter work may require additional labour.
Natural-look premium coatings can also be priced differently from a standard clear system because the preparation and application requirements vary.
For initial advice, send Chris several clear photographs, the approximate floor area and details of any damage or change in appearance you would like to achieve.

Currumbin Floor Sanding — Frequently Asked Questions
Can old Cypress Pine floors be sanded?
Many Cypress Pine floors can be sanded and refinished. Their condition, remaining timber thickness, movement, previous sanding and any damaged areas need to be assessed first.
Can sanding remove the yellow or amber appearance?
If the amber colour comes from the existing coating, sanding can remove it and expose the lighter timber underneath. The final appearance will then depend on the coating or colour system selected.
What is a raw-look timber floor finish?
A raw-look system is designed to keep the timber closer in appearance to freshly sanded wood while still providing a protective coating. It does not leave the floor untreated.
Will every dent and dark mark disappear?
Surface wear can often be substantially improved, but Cypress Pine is relatively soft and deeper dents or staining may remain. Excessive sanding should not be used simply to chase every imperfection.
Is a matt floor harder to clean than a glossy floor?
The sheen level primarily affects appearance and light reflection. Regular cleaning should be completed with suitable timber-floor products and methods recommended for the selected coating.
How long will the floor sanding take?
Timing depends on the floor area, repairs, access and coating system. Allowance is required for preparation, coating and drying between stages. Chris will discuss the expected schedule before work begins.
When can furniture and rugs return?
A coating may accept limited foot traffic before it has fully cured. You will receive instructions for furniture, rugs, cleaning and protecting the floor during early use.
